Paul (@paultristis) is an architect with a palpable interest in health. “I wouldn't describe my habits as aspirational, but I do think I'm healthier than most,” he says. Here’s what Paul likes to do to stay healthy…
A little dirt
A lot of people hate this, but getting dirty is good for you. I grew up swimming in ponds full of live fish and cow manure, and I feel healthiest when I spend a lot of time outside in an uncontrolled environment. I've been sick once in the past 3 years, so I'm a firm apologist for not being afraid of some mess.
Cooking with lard
Food that tastes good is better for you, and good lard is the best-tasting fat out there. I use it to bake pies and biscuits, and put some in whenever I put a bone for peas, stew, or vegetables. It's also great for stir-fry.
It can be hard to find some that isn't partially hydrogenated, but a good butcher will sell you some for cheap if you ask nicely. There's also some online, but you'll pay more.
Less radiation from your phone
I feel like my phone is driving me insane a lot, so I've been looking for ways to deal with this. I know this sounds out there, but people are produced by their environments, which includes a lot of stuff you don't typically think about. I recently got this radiation-blocking hat kind of randomly, and it does really help with that spinny ADHD tension everyone seems to have. It's also a pretty good sun hat if you're going to the beach.
Sleeping on the floor
I've been sleeping on the floor for years now. My sleeping is a lot better than it was before I started doing this, and my back problems are gone. After some initial experiments with indoor camping, I settled on a cotton shikibuton. It sleeps great and shows no sign of getting flat or worn out. It also saves space, and folding it up in the morning gives me a good transition into the day.
Long walks
Yoko Ono said she walks about 80 blocks, which sounds about right to me. A few miles is just long enough to pass through a few neighborhoods in the city, or get across town in the country. Walking is great for clearing your head, but it's important to be aimless. If you know where you're going your mind isn't quite in the right place. After a good walk the world should feel simple, big and small at the same time, like a map.
Marseille soap
I use the same bar of soap to wash my face and ass, and it's this one. I also use it for shaving; I don't own any other body products besides some argan & coconut oil. Stop shampooing. It's pointless.
